Learning SEO | Building Backlinks For SEO

In The Beginning

If you are new to the internet marketing world and are working to create a website or blog which promotes your company, business, or any other service or product that you offer, then there are a few simple things that you need to know about search engines.  The story below depicts my experiences and how I learned to apply some simple principles in order to get my websites and blogs to rank well in the search engine results pages (SERPS) so prospective customers will actually see my services/products.

The First Blog

It was merely a couple of years ago when I first began my conquest to create a website for a small home-business which I was hoping could be a reliable source for income in times when the economic recession was blossoming.   A carpenter by trade, I believed that if only I could get the word out that I have numerous skills ranging from general remodeling to custom work, and that I offered very affordable rates, that some work would inevitably come my way.  But the question remained: How could I effectively advertise/market my services in my community?  Most importantly, how could I achieve this for FREE!  I know they have those cork-board ad placements in laundromats and grocery stores, but I was thinking a little bigger than that!  Then one evening I overheard a person talking about his “blog” and how it was an open-source application on the internet in which he would have hundreds and thousands of people visiting for social conversation.  Immediately the gears began to mesh and I was certain that this “blog” thing could have some potential to spread the word faster than some little note on the wall.  At that time I had not even heard of the terms “Internet Marketing” (IM), “Search Engine Optimization” (SEO),”Search Engine Marketing” (SEM) or backlinks, let alone any understanding or working knowledge of their importance.  I would never have imagined that in just a couple of short years I would have a respectable level of expertise in SEO and SEM, and a precise understanding of the importance of proper backlink strategy.  Anyhow…  When I got home later that evening I began searching for a resource to create a blog for myself so I could get hundreds and thousands of people to know that I am available to handle their home improvement needs.  “This is it”; or so I thought…

Being relatively internet savvy and a pretty loyal fan of Google®, I ultimately found my way to Blogger and commenced to create my first site.  I had no clue on how the functions of this blog operated and simply wrote a very brief post entitled, “Does Your Home Need Some Loving Care?,” and clicked the publish button.  I would suppose that just like any novice blogger I believed this resource was simply like an advertisement that would be available to the whole world once I clicked that publish button, but I soon discovered that I was gravely mistaken… Taking into consideration that it may take a few minutes for my paltry little blog post to filter through cyberspace, I waited about 5-10 minutes before I fervently began to scour the Google search engine for my blog post.  Can you believe that I could not find it — even after an hour or so?  I searched under every conceivable phrase and term, but nothing!

There are a litany of steps involved with how and when the search engines display any given website or blog, and the most essential component is commonly referred to as Internet Marketing

From Carpenter to Successful Internet Marketer

Simply stated, Internet Marketing (IM) is the marketing of products or services over the internet. It also refers to the placement of media along different stages of the customer engagement cycle through banner ads on specific websites, search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), e-mail marketing, and Web 2.0 strategies.

The primary form of IM that must be applied first is SEO.  After all, if your site is not optimized for the search engines your just spinning your wheels and going nowhere.  When I first created my site I was spinning my wheels BIG TIME!  I did not know what I was doing and thus, my site was not being indexed by the search engines.  As such, one of the first things I learned was that there are certain components which help your site rank well with the search engines to get it indexed.  If your site is not indexed it will not show up in the search engines results…

First and foremost are Keyword Components; a term I coined to simply applying a SEO strategy which ensures that your primary keyword is properly nestled in optimal places for maximum search engine consideration. Read more about Keyword Components
